Fertilizing

  • Use wood ashes around the vegetable garden, bulb beds, and non-acid loving plants if soil pH is below 6.0

  • Finish planting and transplanting trees, shrubs, perennials, and spring-flowering bulbs

  • Prune out old canes on blackberries and raspberries

  • Remember to water evergreen trees and shrubs before winter sets in
  • Continue filling compost bin with fallen leaves
  • Prepare vegetable beds for next spring
  • Winterize your tools (wipe with rag dipped in paint thinner to remove sticky resins, sharpen, and oil thoroughly)
  • Clean house gutters for fallen leaves, needles, and twigs (heavy rainfall will quickly overflow clogged gutters, possibly damaging foundation plant below)
  • Order fruit trees and grapevines this month for a February or March delivery and planting
