Cultural practices during the dormant season can kill overwintering pests as well as limit the spread of disease. Selective pruning of old and diseased wood can suppress populations of blueberry bud mites while clearing the ground cover in surrounding woods and field margins destroys overwintering plum curculio and the eggs of sharpnosed leafhoppers.
