Description
Both the adults and larvae are predatory on aphids as well as a variety of other small insects. The adults are extremely variable in their coloration so can be challenging to identify quickly.
Identification

Adults
Round, concave on top, flat underneath. Small, clubbed antennae. White ‘bell’ shape on head, four black spots and two white patches on thorax. Highly variable color and spotting pattern on abdomen.
Larvae
Spiny alligator-like bodies with an oval of orange spines on a blue-black abdomen. Legs that appear sharp and footless at the ends.
Value in Pest Management
These non-native beetles are generalist predators, feeding on a variety of small arthropods in a variety of cropping systems. They clearly contribute to pest management. However, they are also pests of homes where they can aggregate in large numbers through the winter. They have also been implicated in the decline of native ladybeetles. They are sold commercially (see BIRC online Directory).
